Sleep Tight by Holly Humberstone

Holly Humberstone is one of the best artists of this next generation, thats my opinion and I’m sure people would agree with me. I feel like her songwriting is simple but it provides us with such a story that we can relate to and thats exactly what her goal is, which makes you think she’s great at her job. But becoming an artist doesn't happen from one day to the next. It happens with practice and hard work. She has been writing music since day one and started recording little demos that played on BBC Radio when she was a teenager and got her a producer( Rob Milton) and an opportunity to tour with Lewis Capaldi in 2020. With all of those mazing things happening, she was named Apple's Up Next Artist in 2020 as well right before releasing her debut EP "Falling Asleep at the Wheel". The title track is so good and Io think I found her through hat song. She has a talent. She's been throwing out bops and just yesterday released a brand new single called "Sleep Tight". Today we're going to do a commentary on the single and just go through a couple lyrics. Let me know in the comments what you guys would like to see next and as always enjoy reading!

Verse 1

"I'm on my way back and feeling kinda sad, Cause you were the best thing I never knew I had, I'm out of streetlights, I better make tracks Cause mum' expects me back, But you were the best thing I never knew I had"

I’ve found that the worst kind if heartbreak comes from one you weren’t expecting. In this case, the sadness comes from a partner you didn’t know you had, meaning you felt something towards them but you weren’t sure if they were reciprocating those feelings and then you find out they did all along and it break your heart because you think that you’ve lost everything with them including a strong friendship. With feeling embarrassed like that, you’d want to leave that situation like Holly says, she’s gotta make tracks because her mom is expecting her. With that line we get the sense that she’s a teenager in love and that’s why the heartbreak and angsty sad emotions are so heightened. You can feel like it’s the end of your world when you’re young.

Pre-Chorus

"And oh my god, I've done it again, I almost killed our friendships and I sure hope its worth it, And I've got all this stuff boiling up Cause I got drunk and said too much, I'm running in circles and now we're-"

Most teenagers can say they drink at parties or just with their friends and I’m sure most of them can relate to the act of being dumb and the bravest you can be while drinking. That’s what Holly’s saying here. Her crush wasn’t expecting to hear something romantic from their friend. That she’s said something to her friend/crush and I guess she thinks it’s going somewhere that might ruin their friendship.

Chorus

“In the back of your car, we're gonna take it too far

God knows I've missed this, I've missed this feeling

You take off your jeans, and my heart started screaming

God knows I've missed– God knows I've missed this feeling

This feeling, this feeling

God knows I've missed this feeling”

So things escalated. Lol I was not expecting this in the song. My guess is that even though things are getting heavy over here Holly is scared of losing the friendship but at the same time she’s happy that things are going somewhere.

Verse 2

”Sleep tight, I'm coming right back to you in double time

'Cause you were the best thing I never knew is mine

And it seems like I wanna rush things, I should just enjoy the ride

'Cause you were the best thing I never knew is mine”

What a change from the first verse to the second. Do you see what I mean? She’s telling a story and we love to see it. She’s now with her partner and she’s ecstatic because she wasn’t sure the other person was hers and she realized they are and thats such a happy feeling. What anway to call the rest of us single, am I right? Insert the screaming crying audio from Tiktok.

Pre-Chorus

“And, oh my god, I can't believe

Everything was working out for me

Well, I sure hope we're worth it (We're worth it)

'Cause I said too much I can't take back

Sorry if you weren't expecting that

We go in circles, in circles, and we're–“

You see I was right, it’s about not expecting the road you’re on but you take it to see how far you can go and this pre- chorus is how you circle back to all the romantic stuff in the second chorus.

The second chorus is the same as the first so no need to comment again on that.

Bridge

”Sleep tight, I'm on my way back and feeling kinda sad

'Cause you were the best thing I never knew I had”

I’m not entirely sure why Holly decided to repeat the idea of being sad but this is the bridge and I have a feeling it’s a way to slow down the song to create some anticipation for the last chorus which hits harder after a slow part. The chorus is once again the same but overall this song tells such a beautiful story and it’s a great upbeat way for me to enjoy myself for 3 minutes and 38 seconds. Holly you absolutely smashed this song and I can’t wait to hear your upcoming songs.
