My 5 Favorite Iconic Musical Films

Before I start this, I’d like to point out I’m doing movies that are widely known and considered “popular“. So, don’t be surprised when you see movies that were hug. The films are from all decades up until now. If you’d like me to make this a series or if you’d like me to review movies, let me know.

Movie 1: Dirty Dancing

This movie is honestly one of my favorites because of how simple it is. It has a minimalist plot but the chemistry and dialogue between the characters keeps us interested the whole time. The romantic opposites attract trope is very well done and it gives us the happy nostalgic ending that you can never get tired of. It’s a dance movie so lots of upbeat music featuring incredible artists and there’s also a solo song from one of the lead characters, Patrick Swayze called She’s Like The Wind. There’s also other songs featuring artists like The Ronettes, Eric Carmen, Maurice Williams and the zodiacs and Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes. I highly recommend this 80s rom-dram for anyone who likes music and romance together. It’s starring Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze as the leads, released in 1987.

Movie 2: Saturday Night Fever

Released in 1977 and starring John Travolta (Hairspray, Pulp Fiction), Saturday Night Fever has all the aspects of a musical movie you’d want. Great music bodied by the iconic Bee Gees, a dance competuition that ends up determining relationships and drama because who doesn’t like a little? I personally love musical films and the more recent ones like Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman because they all come from a point of truth and it showcases the artists from their point of view and while not everything can be true, it’s so interesting to see what life was like in those times and to see what’s changed and what’s stayed the same.

Movie 3: Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion

This movie has to be in my top ten because I love it so much. Just the outfits, the music, the actresses and the whole feel of the movie. While this isn’t a musical kind of film, the soundtrack is incredible with the iconic Heaven Is A Place On Earth by Belinda Carlisle as one of the ending songs in the film. Lisa Kudrow as we all know is an amazing actress and in this film, she brings a comedy to the table that makes you want to laugh the whole way through. Mira Sorvino has this incredibly rich dark alto voice that has you wanting a podcast from her. About anything. The outfits are so 90s and in the film, their wardrobe is “made“ by these two actresses seeing as they design their clothes. This movie will want you excited for your 10 year high school reunion in no time. You’ll also have the sudden urge to want to make all your clothes, and that’s ok. Overall, the film is well set up and the acting is great. There’s parts of the script that aren’t realistic but it’s a movie. That’s what we look for. We don’t always want truth. We want a fun story that’ll make us laugh.

Movie 4: Mamma Mia

This is the movie. It’s the shit and you don’t tell me otherwise. Meryl Streep is so versatile and this is only one of the characters she can play. This movie and Devil Wears Prada are completely different but both iconic. This movie was released 2008 starring Meryl and Amanda Seyfriend (Mean Girls, Les Mis, Jennifer’s Body). Overall, I think this movie has an incredible soundtrack and the storyline is so interesting. A girl’s getting married and she invites 3 men who could possibly be her father all the while incorporating incredible dance numbers. It’s an amazing story and the sequel as well is great.

Movie 5: Bohemian Rhapsody

Queen is one of the best bands in our century and it was incredible to see this homage to them in Bohemian Rhapsody. Starring Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury, his mannerisms, his charm, his way of being in this movie really makes you feel like you’re witnessing the history being made. There’s so many good things I can say about this film. The acting was absolutely off the roof. The stories make you feel like you’re in the time of Queen and it’s a wonderful feeling to have. The film was released in 2018, also starting Ben Hardy (The Voyeurs), Lucy Boynton (Murder on the Orient Express), Gwilym Lee (Midsomer Murders) and Joseph Mazzello (Jurassic Park, The Social Network). This is probably almost at the top of my list for my favorite movies ever. I highly recommend it.
